Background Tournament Success
Dropping out of college at the age of 21, Daniel frst started playing poker professionally in Vegas, and after a few tried and failed measures (involving going broke and having to rebuild his bankroll from scratch), he finally hit the big stage aged 23 with two first place finishes at the 1997 World Poker Finals at Foxwoods – taking home over $50,000 and being voted the tournament’s best all round player.
Fastly becoming one of the world’s leading professional tournament players, Negreanu hit the payday big time in 1998 winning the WSOP $2000 Pot Limit Holdem Event = becoming the youngest ever WSOP bracelet winner at the time (a record broken in 2004 and again in 2009 by 21 year old Peter Eastgate in the Main Event).
In the next few years Negreanu competed for more honours on the poker circuit taking down 3 more WSOP bracelets in ’03, ’04 and ’08 respectively. He also made appearances at 9 other final tables and was nominated the World Series of Poker Player of the Year in 2004. He subsequently went on to become the WPT’s player of the year in 2005.
Limited Tournament Player?
In total, Negreanu has won over 30 grand slam tournaments world wide, and is rightly regarded as one of the best tournament players. He draws most his criticism however on the fact that most his live tournament wins have come from Limit Events. No fewer than 3 out of his 4 WSOP bracelets have come from Limit Event (Limit Holdem and Pot Limit Holdem), and many poker players have suggested the mentality and skills required in the limit games don’t inveigle in to the No Limit varieties quite so effectively. Having said this, his tournament career winnings and legendary position Team PokerStars (recruited n 2007) shows what a quality and recognised player he is.
Other Accomplishments
After spending the last decade at the top of poker’s greatest current players, Negreanu has a list of achievements and successes outside of tournaments. As well as being a tutor for the up and coming Poker School Online, he’s contributed a number of articles to the lexicon of poker strategy available offline and was also an official contributor to Doyle Brunson’s infamous Super System 2 book.
Alongside this, fans will have seen poker’s very own Mr Nice Guy on a variety of poker tv shows including Late Night Poker, Poker After Dark and High Stakes Poker. Daniel’s also made small cameo appearances in Hollywood films including X men Origins and Lucky You (both times as a poker player).
