Background to Poker

Coming to the US from South Vietnam at the age of 14, Nguyen became acquainted with poker at backroom games in Orange County.  Eventually expelled from school from spending too time playing the game, he later became introduced to casino poker where he started earning as much a $150 per night at NL Holdem.  However after losing most of it playing $3/$6 Stud, he admittedly described himself as a fish.  Using the skills and observations picked up from the casino, he soon began playing poker professionally from 21 years old.  After famously turning a $7000 bankroll into $1,000,000 at Vegas in the late 1980s, he found himself eventually earning $50,000 to $100,000 a night at Caesers palace, playing alongside poker pros Johnny Chan and David Grey.

One of the World’s Best MTT Players

Already with 5 WSOPs to his name, Scotty Nguyen if clearly a gifted tournament player.  With WSOP victories in a bevy of poker varieties – including Omaha, Holdem and Horse – poker just seems natural to him.  He even stated famously that the only type of World Series of Poker event he has yet to win is 2-7 lowball.  His current list of tournament achievements outside the WSOP includes a 2006 WPT Title along with 13 money finishes in the circuit; as well as holding one money finish in the EPT.

In 2009 Nguyen won the inaugural LA Poker Classic $10,000 Horse World Championship netting him a further $339,743.  He’s also made appearances on the Ultimate Blackjack Tour and the hit TV chat show Late Night with Conan O’Brian.

Although known around the poker circuits as a happy, loose relaxed figure, Nguyen got into the negative limelight during his 2008 WSOP $50,000 Horse event where he exhibited what many believe to be rule-breaking remonstrations involving the drinking of large quantities of alcohol and actively accosting players while playing.
